Google custom search
October 23, 2006
Google announced a brand new custom search engine today. I have one set up for bioinformatics/computational biology related searches at my favorite sites. Still a work in progress, but feel free to give it a try. It’s also visible on my sidebar

Google docs and blogging
October 11, 2006
Googe Docs is a combo of google spreadsheetes and the recently acquired Writely. In keeping with some excellent recent offerings from Google, I hope this will become a resource for blogging and personal documents. I am already completely addiced to Google Calendar and Google Reader. More than anything else though, I am testing the publishing capabilities of the application.
A blogging hiatus

Due to an aforementioned relocation, I will be offline for a week or so. This means that there will be no Things I Noticed next Saturday, nor any other blog posts.

Life without a laptop?
July 7, 2006
Ever had your worst fears realized? I think I did over the weekend. I lost my entire hard drive. Apparently, the data are irrecoverable and I have to painstakingly build my list of files from scratch. With all my travel, its been a while since I had backed anything up. Now, I am busy emailing people and trying to recreate all my files. Some are backed up on places like backpack, while others reside on thumb drives, some random CDs, etc. Some might even be backed up on our online solution, but I am convinced that nothing less than 6 months old, cause I haven’t been around enough.
I am blaming European voltages. Second time this has happened to be after a Europe trip. Good to have a scapegoat and ignore the fact that while I am maniacal about backing up my personal desktop at home, I never back up my work laptop.
Question: How sad is it that my worst fear is losing the data on my laptop?
