The bbgm daily
March 22, 2008
In case you haven’t noticed, I have been recording a short riff daily (1-2 minutes) using Kyte.tv. The bbgm daily is hosted on my video page at bbgm.tv. The way things stand, video integrated into blog posts (longer riffs, screencasts) get hosted on Ooyala and the conversation stays on the blog. Quick riffs, conference reports, etc go onto Kyte, since each recording stays in a single player and you don’t proliferate files. So if you care keep an eye out on bbgm.tv and drop by for a chat or two. You can always find my latest thoughts on video and video platforms on the wiki

Things that make you happy to be a science blogger #110
March 19, 2008
I use the word “science blogger” somewhat reluctantly, cause there is a lot of science blogging (e.g. anything with politics) that I don’t care for, but threads like this one in the tech blogosphere are why I like being in my little niche. It’s still fun in our little world
Why I should get a beta for Twine?
March 13, 2008
Nova Spivack asks the question and here is my response.
Readers of this blog know about my fascination with the structured, distributed web and open data, and the role the semantic web can play on that web. This fascination has reached a point where I ended up reversing a decision I made a few years ago about walking away from programming and honing my skills and knowledge in strategic concepts.
I have long felt that Twine occupies an important in the future of the Semantic Web. Unlike technology platforms like Freebase or Talis, Twine is an application that abstracts away the technology, an essential step in the widespread adoption of the Semantic Web. I have argued that in a perfect world, the end user does not really need know that they are functioning on the Semantic Web, but rather just feel the impact of a power powerful backend. However, in order for the developer (and investor) community to embrace that idea we need applications that are built on top of an RDF infrastructure and bring to people powerful functionality derived from the Semantic backend. Usability and functionality will be a key, and this is why so much rides on the success of Twine. It has mindshare, it has guns trained on it, and the last thing one wants is for Twine to fall into the Hype and Naysayers trap.
Plus, if I get into something (Lijit is an example), you won’t find too many people better to provide constructive criticism

Two years, a new year and a look ahead
December 31, 2007
It’s New Years Eve and bbgm just turned two in its incarnation as a self-hosted wordpress blog. By now you’ve all seen the new (and still in progress) design. It harks to bbgm being more of a website and not just a blog. I hope to write some informational content this year and doing specific video material that is a driver for the change. So what else can we expect in 2008?
For starters an emphasis on the three subjects shown on page one, specifically personalized medicine, the web as platform and open science/open data. I also hope to write more about molecular modeling and simulation and not just about informatics. Must of the focus will remain as before will the usual geeky stuff, but I want to try and do some more commentary around issues I have been thinking about for a long time and their relevance, commercially and socially.
One hope in 2008 is to start a weekly live broadcast, perhaps with a co-host, which will be available for offline viewing on bbgm.tv. Grand plans, but we’ll have to see what time permits.
That’s about it. Happy New Year folks and so keep reading and commenting. Here’s a short screencast pointing to various elements of the new design
Amazon deals widget
November 22, 2007
Between 6 am and 6 pm pacific time on Friday, Amazon is going to be running Black Friday deals. I am holding out for some gadgets myself, so for the next 24 hours I plan to run the Amazon Deals widget (I have an affiliates account). Apparently it will pull in deals all day long tomorrow. Hopefully, those of you who have nothing better to do will find something of interest.
For more cool deals and coupons just visit Chris Pirillo’s page
