Another weekly roundup. This last week was spent at the Society of Toxicology meeting here in Seattle, but did manage to find some juicy titbits for the weekly roundup
Linkfest
Via ReadWriteWeb, we heard about the Under the Radar Conference. The following participating companies caught my eye:
Some familiar ones (all of which I use in some way or another)
and some new ones. It’s interesting that the ones that really catch my eye are not exactly on the consumer side of things.
- Cozimo - Real time video and image collaboration
- Elastra - Allows companies to design, deploy & manage database and application infrastructure in the cloud (on top of Amazon’s infrastructure)
- Jumpbox - Now this is one very interesting company, which provides a virtual toolbox of open source server software. Definitely worth looking at
- YOICS - Transforms any computer or network attached device instantly into an easily accessible and shareable internet resource
In other links
- IBM’s cloud computing center in Ireland (via Noel O’Boyle)
- Leo Laporte is getting into video big time
Multimedia
- The molecular structure of the nuclear pore complex
- The Boston Dynamics Robotic Dog
- Google’s academic cloud computing initiative
- Apache Lucene Feathercast
Blogspotting
- Tom White’s wonderful blog on large scale computing
- Chris Lasher adds another cool life science blog to the science blog world. Welcome aboard
Events
Lots of events this time round
- ICWSM 2008 is around the corner right here in Seattle. Don’t have the bandwidth to attend, but hope to meet Euan while he is in town for the event
- Freebase User Group Meeting (April 16th)
- Rails Conf
- SC 2008 is now accepting submissions
- Richard Akerman and Peter Murray-Rust will be at Open Repositories 2008
- The Synthetic Biology 4.0 conference is being held in Hong Kong
- Bio-IT World is in Boston from April 28-30. I will be there as well
Self Assembly
As mentioned earlier, I have been trying to get my online video life in order. For now I have settled on Ooyala as a content management and delivery system for video’s that come within context of the blog. Kyte.tv serves up “casual” content, including a new bbgm daily and Mogulus is the place for live broadcast video, if and when I ever get around to doing any. In the past, I’ve had problems with using Mogulus when bandwidth is low, so for conference streaming, I might switch to UStream. Just visit bbgm.tv for bbgm in video.
I have also recently set up an account on the Talis platform. Part of my goals is to use Talis and Freebase to start develop data-driven apps. Keep an eye on the Wiki to track what is going to be slow progress given that this is conference season and I am traveling a bit.
As always you can find me on Twitter, visit the tumblelog, or check out my lifestream
