Googminder

March 20, 2008

This is really cool stuff, and what I was hoping to see when Google acquired Gapminder. Google has announced the Google Visualization API. Not only this, the Visualization API has been linked to spreadsheets in Google Docs. The Gadget Gallery for the API highlights some really cool visualizations, from heatmaps to Motion Charts.

Has anyone had a chance to use these yet? I haven’t had luck getting the gadget to work with Swivel datasets (first thing I tried). The one comment on the motion chart isn’t exactly encouraging.

I just read the API. It contains a nice sql-like API. But as far as I can see, apart from the graphical widgets, it is only interesting if you want to play with someone else’s data. Not really useful if you’ve got your own php/mysql server.
