Amazon’s web services show the way
January 30, 2008
OK, I don’t get Amazon’s love for inane patents, but their web services engine, which I am an unabashed fan of is for real. Amazon’s web services bandwidth now accounts for more than half of traffic on all of Amazon’s properties, in fact the traffic on EC2 and S3 was more than all the rest of the Amazon universe combined.. Not only that, the number of registered developers on the service exceeds 300,000.
As an AWS user via Bioscreencast and Ooyala I am a believer. Last weekend, at Seattle Startup Weekend, the business plan we put together was “server free”, and completely built with the idea that our service would be hosted on Amazon’s infrastructure. This is just a start. The deluge, the one promised in The Big Switch is still some years away, but its coming. Personally, I can’t wait for the life science industry to demonstrate more examples of life on the cloud.
