Mashing up the bioinformatics web

December 18, 2006

As someone who is completely fascinated with getting the most out of biological informatics, I was certainly intrigued when my weekly search of the bioinformatics literature showed up a paper which had the phrase “personalized bioinformatics web” in it. That the abstract included Firefox and Greasemonkey, both of which are part of my existence as I know it (sad isn’t it), pretty much made the paper a must read.

Pierre is among those who has taken the lead in developing greasemonkey scripts and Google Gadgets for all kinds of applications. What I would like to see is open APIs for a number of bioinformatics resources, which allow developers to come up with all kinds of widgets and other mashups (e.g. EBI/NCBI data) (actually I think NCBI and EBI APIs are readily available), and more importantly a cultural shift in the scientific/bioinformatics community. Wouldn’t it be great if we could get all the tools we needed for our daily literature and biological mining in that format. From my experience with widgets and mashups, the add on value to already useful services is immense, and I look forward to a slew of bio-related widgets and mashups.
