Ever wondered about the power of the internet? Well I bring you exhibit #1. The other day, I was reading a presentation by Ian Davis of Talis on the Semantic Web. On slide #20, Ian writes “There open data is more important than open source”. I quoted most of that sentence (minus the “therefore”) on my tumblelog, cause it sounded cool, and yes, something I do believe in. But I never imagined the aftermath.
The little quote ended up spawning two blog posts and several Friendfeed conversations. They are all worth reading
Interestingly it points out a problem too, and that is the lack of context in the qoute. Without seeing Ian’s presentation, especially the preceding slide, which conjectures that data outlasts code, you really can’t tell why the statement was made. That is a post for another day, but you can always read this
