Around the Web – Feb 16, 2008

Around the web is back. Since I like regular features, it’s time to resurrect the weekly roundup, especially since there are all these links to share and this is always a good way to share them.

• Robert Scoble has some killer pictures of a tour of CERN and the Large Hadron Collider
• Kathy Sierra was one of my favorite bloggers, until a series of unfortunate events pushed her off the web. Rhe O’Reilly Radar just put up a video of a conversation Tim O’Reilly had with Kathy for the Tools of Change conference

• Transight and Unilever extend relationship (pdf). Transight is the company that developed gopubmed. Their commercial ventures use some of the same technology. Perfect example of a freemium model in the life science search space.
• We go back to O’Reilly for another interesting data mining app, an interesting post on Markmail, which is used to mine mailing lists 
• Semantic plugin, Blue Organizer gets an upgrade, and while you are at it, check out ARC, a semantic web system for PHP (and WordPress support as well)
• Speaking of the semantic web, City Guide is an interesting example of how Freebase can be used as a backend to mashup information, in this case, Google Maps and Amazon APIs are used in conjuction with Freebase
• The Industry Standard is back. Not everyone likes it, but I do, especially the prediction market
• Nature Network celebrates a birthday
