The web as platform: Amazon Web Services continues to grow

Moving on from the knol project. Last night I saw a Tweet from Jeff Barr announcing the limited beta of Amazon Simple DB

1. is schema-less
2. designed for scalability
3. indexes your data

Jeff Bezos is a genius. Just giving the green light to an effort that might define how we get access to computing resources in the future makes him one. One of my goals over the next two weeks is to get up and running with projects that tap into the cloud. We are already using S3 and some day EC2 for Bioscreencast and I am trying out Mogulus and Ooyala, both built on top of Amazon’s web services.

I watch two companies more closely than any others – Google and Amazon. Google already rules the world. Barring some serious missteps, 10 years from now, they will be the two most relevant tech companies on the planet.
