Around the web – November 18, 2007

What a week, and I am still swamped with work. So what happened around the web this week? Well, for one, less video than usual. But Leo Laporte said something the other day that really resonated with me. Blog, Podcast, etc are very limited terms, and you don’t have to stick to one media form. That’s exactly the reason why I want to use multiple media forms on bbgm, “videocasts”, podcasts, screencasts and other “casts”, as complements to the usual textual fare.

For one, I joined the DNA Network on feedburner. Now that I am writing regularly about personalized medicine, it was an appropriate move.

Trying something different this time by recording a screencast. Actually made a small mistake and uploaded to screencast.com without the download option, so can’t put the screencast into Kyte like I wanted to. Next time. (Update: Turns out it would still have not worked, so it’s a moot point)

You know…screencasts, podcasts and the like are all great, but how about a transcript for those of us who like to quote, link, and skim?

:) You’re not the only one who’s mentioned that to me. One of the challenges I am trying to address is the whole “right medium for the right content” problem. In general. I need to look into some auto-transcription solutions, since most of my screencasts, videocasts are recorded between work stints. Will try and add at least some minimal transcription in the future.

Also has something to do with the way I consume media. I am often happier with audio and video than with text since I can listen while I work.

Hopefully will be able to find a happy balance.

Jing is really cool! I dig it.
The only bummer with Jing is you can only download .swf-format.

Do you actually know a free tool that transcodes .swf to .flv? I couldn’t find a free one so far.
Like this, I could post some great screencasts onto Kyte and talk with my fellow friends about certain things…

It definately sucks being limited to uploading certain types of media, but thats one problem that kyte doesn’t have! You can post pictures, videos, text, polls, links, and record video and audio directly on the site to be posted to your channel.

It’s cool that I can post more than just videos!
