The GTO effect

Someone create a “GTO this” button please. The “Digg Effect” experienced by many tech blogs to the extent of server breakdown is legendary. Of course, us mortal science bloggers, especially those talking about subjects other than evolution or transhumanism are never likely to be Dugg to the point that our servers are brought to their knees. Come to think of it, the last think I want is a bunch of completely clueless children reading the material in this blog. Attacks on Digg aside, there is the science equivalent of the Digg effect. I have seen spikes in traffic before, mostly when I comment on a post on the official Google blog, but aside from that my biggest spikes have come when my posts have featured at Genome Technology Online. Given how often Keith Robison shows up there, I suspect he has had experience with being GTO-ed. Although given how good his blog is, once there, the readers probably subscribe.
