Sean Eddy on Open Science

A couple of weeks ago Sean Eddy accepted the Benjamin Franklin Award for 2007. Some vignettes from his acceptance talk

We want not just humans to be able to read the literature, but computers to be able to read the literature.

For me, open access is secondary. The goal is to create systems that work… open access is necessary but not sufficient.

I couldn’t agree more on the second point. Open Access is a vehicle to better, more innovative, science, and the dissemination of information. The problem is too many make it the centerpiece of their arguments while overlooking the bigger picture.

One thing I didn’t know. The International Society for Computational Biology has a policy against open source software. Talk about “does not compute”.

Do you have a link for ISCB’s policy against open source software? I must say that I find this hard to believe.
